Hello Camp Family

At the start of March when we released our update that Camp Lawrence would be opening its doors, we couldn’t have fathomed how quickly our world would change. When we received word that the state would begin sheltering in place, we quickly started adapting our program and prayed that this pandemic would end soon. We carried on as normal, hiring staff, planning events, getting excited to see you all come June, all the while knowing that the world around us was changing rapidly. When Gov. Holcomb released his plan to reopen the state, we also created a 15-page plan to reopen Camp Lawrence, following CDC and social distancing guidelines. However, due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic, we, along with the Diocese of Gary, have come to the conclusion that it is not safe to hold camp this summer. This decision does not come lightly and not without deep discernment as we battled with many elements outside of our control.

The mere thought of another summer without seeing all of our favorite faces breaks our hearts. We regret not being able to welcome new faces to 700 N or to properly say goodbye to our 14-year-olds who have been with us for so many years. We are also saddened at this closure on the cusp of so many renovations made by the diocese to improve the camper experiences and help make even more memories. However, as we stated in our reopening plan, “Our first and foremost priority at Camp Lawrence is the safety and well-being of our campers”. We want our campers more than anything to experience mud hikes, polar bear, and maybe a ghost story or two, but only when it is safe for them and their families.

With that being said, it has been clear during these strange times that what makes Camp Lawrence so special is not only the beautiful land; it is the friendship bracelets and gaga games, the laughs and giggles, the fires and stories, but most importantly it is all of you. With that in mind, we here at Camp Lawrence have been brainstorming for the past month on ways that we can continue the camp spirit from a distance. After deliberating with other camp directors from across the country and within our own team we have come to the following conclusion: If you cannot come to Camp Lawrence, we will bring Camp Lawrence to you. We have designed an at-home camp kit filled with activities, crafts, and everything else one would need to hold camp at home. We will also include scheduled live events, such as Friday Fire or all camp bingo, where we can all connect as one camp family from a distance. While we recognize that this is a small substitute for the real thing, our main goal is to keep the camp spirit, years of tradition, and camp friendships, alive and well, albeit from our own homes.

We will be releasing a poll for parents and campers to gauge interest in our at-home camp program and following that response, we will begin releasing final details. When all is said and done, we appreciate your continued faith and support in the Camp Lawrence summer program. We feel this is a fitting reminder in such an uncertain time that these breaks from camp are never goodbye, simply goodnight. We hope to see many of you this summer.

Thank you,
Jennifer

Open to children ages seven to fourteen, this resident camp has enabled youth to experience the wonders of the great outdoors in a Catholic Christian environment. Through the guidance of trained counselors, the youth grow physically, intellectually and spiritually as they share adventures sitting by the campfire, going on a nature hike, swimming, creating works of art, plus playing sports and so much more.
